Once in Illinois

Bring back the fireflies,
the tiny carriers of torches.
Bring back the crickets'
constant chorus.
Those insect courtiers,
echoing our kisses.
Blessed by and in those
prairie grasses
higher than high masses.
Nothing then between us
my bride of Illinois.
