Surprise Ultrasound

I forget
what a heartbeat
sounds like
the doctor can’t detect one.
No beat, just
white noise, infinite
space in my abdomen.
I beat back
my own banging pulse, beat back
empty thoughts
of an empty body. I race
my husband down the hall to the ultrasound room.
A pause.     A beat.
A pale form appears on the screen.
Its heart sounds less
like a beat and more
like an avalanche or a waterfall,
but it will do.
